Winners of the National Sporting Association (ASN) category of the 2008 J-WRC competition, the KNAF Talent First Team Holland, will decide on 24 November which drivers to support in 2009.
The team is run by the Dutch National Motorsports Federation (KNAF) and is backed by the Dutch National Olympic Committee and National Sports Federation. In 2008 it ran two cars in the J-WRC for Hans Weijs Jr. and Kevin Abbring, two young rally drivers from the Netherlands who were selected after a national talent scouting programme.
On the final round of the J-WRC series in Corsica the two youngest drivers in the J-WRC brought thier cars to the finish to secure the FIA ASN Cup for their team, beating the Equipe de France FFSA team 58 points to 50. Despite its inexperinece the Dutch team was always going to be a strong contender, thanks to the benefit of two drivers eligible to score points, against one from France (Ogier).
A spokesman for the team said it had every intention of entering the J-WRC again next year - preferably with two teams. “The system is that KNAF selects and supports young talented drivers, and although we are very pleased with the performance of both Kevin Abbring and Hans Weijs Jr our selection committee has to decide, on 24 November, which drivers will get the support in 2009. In addition to Kevin and Hans there are a few more candidates.”
Of the team’s 2008 line-up Kevin Abring Abbring and co-driver Erwin Mombaerts were the best placed, bringing thier Renault Clio R3 to 13th in the overall J-WRC contest and third in class A7, out of 14 contestants. “In three of the six rallies we scored points and I’m sure we can do better next year,” said Abbring, who is hoping to enter the J-WRC season again in 2009.
In a year which was largely about learning the rallies and the characteristics of their Citroen C2 R2 MAX, Hans Weijs Jr. and co-driver Hans Van Goor finished 17th overall. “I’m hoping to return to the J-WRC next year, but then with a Super1600 Citroen C2 - the same as Sebastien Ogier’s,” said Weijs Jr, who will test the faster Citroen soon.
