Norway attracts WRC interest
For hosting a future round of the championship
The Solberg brothers might have
a WRC event in their country
The international rally community is positive about Norway's candidature for hosting a future World Rally Championship round, according to feedback from WRC teams and individuals at recent rounds in Sardinia, Cyprus and Turkey.
Rally Norway's management team met with representatives for the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), ISC (International Sportsworld Communicators, the TV and commercial rights holder of WRC) and several teams during these three recent events.
“My conclusion from these meetings is that we are considerably strengthened in our effort to become organisers for a WRC round,” says Jim Carlsen, Managing Director for Rally Norway. “I received strong signals of a wish to have two WRC rounds on snow and to ‘pair' more rounds, that is to hold consecutive rounds in relatively close geographical proximity with a short interval between them. The combination of Sweden and Norway should therefore be an attractive proposition.,” says Carlsen.
TWO RALLIES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE
Rally Norway's unique plan is to organise the winter rally one week immediately before the Uddeholm Swedish Rally. The teams will be invited to go to Norway's Haslemoen test camp, a former military camp only 180 kilometers across the border from the Swedish Rally HQ. There the teams will have free accommodation and large heated halls at their disposal to house cars, equipment and temporary workshops to test in advance of both rallies and to stay for the duration of Rally Norway.
Invitation to Norway
Rally Norway's Managing Director briefed the FIA and teams in person on the Norwegian application process and said the proposal will be submitted in late summer 2005. Teams have been offered free access to the WRC Test Camp in Haslemoen in December 2005 when Route Manager Bruno Berglund will prepare several test roads of the same character as the Special Stages in the Swedish and proposed Norwegian WRC rounds.
WRC on Olympic track
Rally Norway will run its main organisation, press centre and start/finish in Hamar, which was a central location during the Winter Olympic Games in 1994. The Viking Ship Arena will be used on one Special Stage, allowing the unique experience of world rally indoors. Norway's rally sport centre Kongsvinger will feature and there are plans to use the ski jump at the Olympic city of Lillehammer. Naturally, Special Stages will be set in the beautiful Nordic mountains to present rally enthusiasts worldwide with pictures of full speed in a glorious winter landscape.
The Rally Norway team welcomes international rally press to Norway, and in typical Norwegian immodesty, is aiming high - to create “the best rally ever”.
